Radon News from the Iowa Legislature

The Iowa legislature appropriated $1 million for radon testing in schools.  Beginning July 1, 2014, schools will be able to seek funding to test their schools for radon.  This funding will go a long way to insuring our students and teachers have a safe environment to learn and work.

The appropriation will go nicely with the radon bill the legislature passed earlier in session.  The radon in schools bill requires the Dept. of Education to educate Iowa’s schools on the dangers of radon and then gather what their plan is for testing and mitigation.  The Department will then report back to the legislature on their findings.  The Governor signed the bill into law on April 17, 2014

Radon Mitigation is simply removing the radon from your home or office. This can be achieved through many different ways. For homes on a basement or sub-slab the most reliable being a sub-slab depressurization system. If your home is on a crawl space then you would want a sub-membrane depressurization system. Below you will find a small guide to how Iowa Radon Testing and Mitigation Services goes about installing a Radon Mitigation System.

Should You Mitigate?

The EPA recommends that everyone should mitigate if the results of the test are 4.0pCi/l or more. So what does 4.0pCi/l mean. Well lets put it in everyday terms. According to Radon Awareness "If you live in a home for 1 year that has exactly 4.0 pCi/L then your radiation exposure is the same as 200 chest x-rays per year."
